Myth 1: Intake of oily foods cause acne.
It is one of the most common misconception among people suffering from acne that having oily food causes for flare up their acne.

But in factual sense there is no scientific proof between the intake of oily food and acne.
If you eat oily food and did not wash your hand before touching your face then it can clog your pores and cause acne. Hence it is advisable to never touch your face with dirty hands.
Instead intake of sugary food can cause acne since spike in blood sugar level can promote inflammation and oil production.
Myth 2: All acne can be treated by same medication
It’s important to find out your own cause of acne rather than just following treatment regimen of your friend who might be suffering from same. It’s important to note that not necessarily a treatment will work on your acne if it does so on your friend’s. This is because each and every person’s skin type is unique.

Some have oily, others have dry and some deal with combination skin type. And Of you have sensitive skin then you should be extra careful while jumping on any product just because your friend liked it and was useful to them.
Myth 3: Applying toothpaste will treat your acne
Toothpastes used to contains triclosain, an ingredient with anti microbial properties, to provide safety against microbes. Hence people used to apply it even on pimples to treat acne. But later it was found that triclosain can cause inflammation within the colon, potentially leading to colon cancer.

Now it has been removed from toothpaste due to it’s side effects.
Hence now it’s advisable not to use toothpaste on your face to treat acne when you have lot better affordable alternatives.
Myth 4: Applying Crushed Aspirin will prevent Acne
Aspirin is commonly used medicine in medical practice. It has got anti inflammatory effects. It contains acetylsalicylic acid which has quite closeness to Salicylic acid, which is used to treat acne.

But acetylsalicylic acid does not provide same benefits as salicylic acid does and hence it should not be used to prevent or treat acne.
It’s better to go with Salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide as spot treatment to treat acne

Myth 5: Acne goes away on it’s own
Though 85â„… acne usually heals on it own. Yet there’s a large group of people whose acne doesn’t go on it’s own and requires medical care either using topical medications like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, adapalene (form of retinoid) Or Oral medications like isotretinoin, antibiotics (Doxycycline, erythromycin, tetracycline).
Even those with healed acne might have acne marks and acne scars left behind on their face and might require medications.
It’s important to note that seek a board certified Dermatologist if your acne affect your emotional and mental health or if it doesn’t go away even after trying over the counter medications.
